Elbrus Resort
Elbrus Resort

The Elbrus All-Season Tourist and Recreational Complex (ATRC) is located in the Elbrus region of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic and has been a popular destination on Russia's tourist map for over half a century. Tens of thousands of athletes and winter sports enthusiasts from around the world flock here. They are drawn by the high-altitude observation platforms, ski slopes, snow park, hiking eco-trails, and the opportunity to climb Elbrus, the highest mountain in Russia and Europe. Elbrus boasts the highest cable car in the country, at an altitude of 3,847 meters. Its uniqueness is confirmed by the Russian Book of Records. The resort boasts a well-developed infrastructure: 19.5 km of maintained ski slopes, 7 ski lifts (including 3 modern gondola lifts), over 65 km of nature trails, and approximately 800 accommodations of varying comfort levels. The resort offers skiing opportunities even in spring and summer. The ski season continues until July, with training camps for regional and national Russian alpine skiing and freestyle teams, and all-Russian alpine skiing competitions taking place.

Kavkaz.RF to Strengthen Avalanche Protection at Mount Elbrus.

The management company for the mountain resort has received approval from Russia’s State Expert Review Board (Glavgosexpertiza) for the first phase of design and survey work aimed at reconstructing snow-retention and avalanche-protection structures at Mount Elbrus. Upgrading the existing avalanche-defense systems is part of a broader initiative to modernize the resort’s infrastructure.

"We plan to upgrade the avalanche and snow-accumulation protection system in the Azau Glade area, at altitudes ranging from 2,329 to 2,965 meters. New cable-and-mesh barriers will be installed across an area of nearly 500,000 square meters; they are designed to prevent avalanches from reaching the residential zone in the glade and the run-out areas of the ski slopes," said Vladimir Lapukhin, First Deputy General Director of Kavkaz.RF.

High-strength metal mesh and cables, engineered to withstand significant loads, will be installed on the southern slope of Mount Elbrus. The snow-retention system is being designed with the region’s seismic activity in mind.

"Special 3-meter-high snow-retention barriers will be installed at seven locations on the southern slope of Mount Elbrus—areas where avalanches most frequently originate—with a total length reaching 17,028 meters," explained Olga Chikhichina, a lead expert at Russia’s State Expert Review Board.

Earlier this year, the State Expert Review Board also approved the development of 12 kilometers of ski slopes of varying difficulty levels in the resort’s eastern sector, including one "green," two "blue," two "red," and three "black" runs. They will be served by four cable cars, for which Kavkaz.RF received a positive expert review (GGE) in the autumn of 2024. These will help relieve the load on the lifts at the Azau glade.
