Gradually destroyed temple by the 60s. The twentieth century was in serious emergency condition. In this regard, the Doctor of Historical Sciences E.I. Krupnov addressed a letter to the Government of the CIASSR about saving a unique architectural monument. As a result of the agreement of the Ministry of Culture of the CIASSR with Georgian special scientific restoration workshops, restoration works of the temple were carried out in 1969-1971 according to the project of the Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR, head of the Department of the Academy of Arts of Georgia architect L. A. Khimshiashvili.
In parallel with the restoration work, archaeological excavations were carried out by the famous Georgian scientist Givi Gaezovich Gambashidze.
