The date of foundation of Pyatigorsk State University is considered to be June 27, 1939, when the Pedagogical School officially became a higher educational institution. Since then, the university has undergone various changes and transformations - an increase in the number of years of study, several renamings - and officially became known as Pyatigorsk State University in 2016. Since 2005, the head of the university is Professor Gorbunov Alexander Pavlovich. By 2009, 10 faculties were formed at the university. Further, on their basis, institutes and higher schools were created, having one of the faculties in their composition. In addition, PSU is actively developing the system of pre-university, postgraduate and additional education. It has a branch in Novorossiysk. Currently, the university has 34 departments. Now Pyatigorsk State University has more than 5,500 students and 3,000 students from different regions of Russia and foreign countries. All the peoples of the Caucasus are also represented in PSU.

Today Pyatigorsk State University is an advanced educational, research and innovation center of the South of Russia, widely known in our country and abroad.

More than 6,000 students, undergraduates, postgraduates and trainees study at PSU in basic educational programs of all levels and forms, as well as about 3,000 students of the continuing education system from 82 regions of Russia and 22 foreign countries. All the peoples of the Caucasus are represented in his friendly family. Our graduates, both Russian and foreign, live and work in more than 120 countries.

Scientific, scientific, pedagogical and innovative potential of PSU is constantly growing. There are 9 multidisciplinary and multilevel units of a new type - Institutes and Higher Schools. A system of continuing education has also been introduced in PSU.

The university has more than 20 research, research and educational institutes, centers and laboratories, 26 main scientific schools, 33 departments, doctoral dissertation councils work, 12 scientific and scientific and artistic journals are published, including the PSU Bulletin and the Opening World magazine.

More than 50 scientific directions are developed at PSU, about 60 scientific conferences, symposiums of international, national and regional levels are held annually.

Four dissertation councils are actively working in the university - forges of young scientific personnel.

Of particular interest are advanced scientific projects implemented through grant and competitive funding, including the federal budget. University scientists are studying the specifics of conflictogenic texts-demotivators published on the Internet. Work is underway to design a specialized neural network that can help blind and visually impaired people join works of painting, sculpture, cinema with the help of audio descriptions – these studies have been conducted at the university for several years. In 2023, the study of the reflection of physicality and cultural experience in data sciences began. Using computer tools, the university also analyzes emotional interethnic communication.

Pyatigorsk State University is a forge of scientific personnel of various directions, it is the alma mater of many current and future professors and famous scientists!
