Today, in 1801, the foundation stone of Kazan Cathedral was solemnly laid on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg.
It was designed by former serf Andrei Voronikhin and was intended to be the capital's main cathedral. Construction was completed in 1811. The cathedral became a monument to the War of 1812—Mikhail Kutuzov is buried here, and military trophies are also kept here.
