According to the decision of the Arbitration Court, St. Petersburg State University is obliged to restore the building of the First Cadet Corps, located on the Cadet Line of Vasilyevsky Island, by January 2027.
“This is the former building of the Home Front Academy, which was transferred to the university to be adapted for modern use. In fact, to accommodate classrooms there, to expand the university's space. Unfortunately, for a long time no work has been carried out there. All this is explained by the lack of funding” - said Vice-Governor V. Omelnitsky.
At the beginning of the XVIII century, part of the site along the Cadet Line was part of the estate of the first governor of St. Petersburg, Prince A.D.Menshikov. In 1731 the estate was occupied by the First Land Nobility Corps, for the needs of which the plots of the French Sloboda were attached to the former estate. The southern two-storied part of the building was rebuilt in 1730-1740 s according to the project of architect D. Trezzini. Part of the Cadet Corps premises in the 1740s was occupied by the Ferre boarding house.
The First Cadet Corps is associated with the names of many famous military commanders - B.H.Minikh, P.A.Rumyantsev, A.V.Suvorov, M.I.Kutuzov, I.I.Betsky. Here taught J.B.Valen-Delamotte, A.Rinaldi, V.I.Bazhenov, and studied K.F.Ryleyev, P.L.Shilling, V.F.Petrushevsky.
Since 1863 the building was used by the Pavlovsk Military School, and in 1882 it was again given to the First Cadet Corps.
The cadet corps was abolished in 1918. Until 1920 the building was occupied by the 3rd Finnish courses of the Red Army and the 1st Petrograd Infantry School.
