Irafsky District

Welcome to the Irafsky District of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania. Located in the southwestern part of the republic, most of the district is mountainous. It borders Georgia, the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, and the Digorsky and Alagirsky districts. The administrative center is the village of Chikola. The population is over 15,000 people, mainly Ossetians and Russians. The Ossetians of the district speak the Digor dialect of the Ossetian language. The economy of the Irafsky District is based on agriculture—there are five collective farms and four state farms here. The district also has a consumer services complex, housing and utilities enterprises, and the Fasnalskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant. Tourism is well developed. The district is rich in historical, cultural, and natural monuments. The Alania National Park is located in the district, where there are many mountaineering, tourist, and ecological trails.

As part of the "Sport of Russia" state program, an interregional sambo tournament dedicated to the memory of Honored Coach of the USSR Nikolai Zakharovich Kozaev was held on May 7 at the Chikola Sports and Recreation Complex.

Approximately 250 young sambo wrestlers born between 2014 and 2017 from North and South Ossetia competed for the title of best in their age categories.

The tournament's guests of honor included Soslan Makoyev, First Deputy Head of the Irafsky District Sambo Administration; Taimuraz Fidarov, President of the North Ossetian Sambo Federation; and Ibragim Tibilov, Master of Sports of International Class in Combat Sambo.

The head of the regional federation noted the high level of emotion in the bouts and the growing popularity of sambo among children, and thanked the coaches, district administrations, and the Ministry of Sport for developing this traditionally Russian sport. He expressed hope that such competitions will be held more frequently.
