The Memorial to Fallen Climbers is a large, freestanding rock to which relatives and friends of deceased climbers affix plaques with their names.

The creation of spontaneous memorials in the mountains is one of the most tragic traditions in mountaineering circles. Elbrus is no exception.

Here, between Shelter 88 and Shelter 11, stands the Memorial to Fallen Climbers—a rock strewn with plaques commemorating the fallen climbers. This high-altitude monument, erected over 60 years ago, can rightfully be called one of the saddest places on the southern slope of Elbrus. Every year, new names appear on this rock.
