The Balkarian saklya is a traditional mountain dwelling of the Balkars, a single-story, elongated house built into the mountainside. The walls are made of wattle, coated with clay and whitewashed; the roof is flat or gabled, covered with thatch or reeds. Inside, there is a central hearth, benches, a trestle bed, an orunduk, and kiiza rugs. The doors are low, and the windows are small openings on the sunny side. Feudal estates had kunatsky (kunat) and battle towers.
