The forests of the Elbrus region are distributed across altitudinal zones: up to 2,000 m – mixed forests (beech, oak, pine); 2,000–2,800 m – elfin forests; and above that – meadows with shrubs.

Flora: over 2,000 species, including endemics (Caucasian rhododendron), bilberry, and lingonberry.

Fauna: 63 mammal species (tur, leopard, bear) and over 110 bird species (black grouse, snowcock).

Role in the ecosystem:

Regulate water balance;

Absorb CO₂, release oxygen;

Protect slopes from erosion and mudflows;

Preserve biodiversity;

Influence the microclimate.

Altitudinal zones: from mixed forests to nival landscapes (above 3,000 m).

Threats: Tourism, pollution, climate change. The forests of the Elbrus region are a key element of the ecosystem that requires protection.
