The Monument to the Heroes of the Defense of Elbrus Region is located at an altitude of 3,500 meters and is one of the highest mountain monuments in Russia. The memorial, consisting of seven steles of varying heights, is located near the Mir cable car station and symbolizes the inaccessibility of the Caucasus Mountains during the Great Patriotic War.

The aluminum steles bear the names of 219 Soviet soldiers who died in the battles for Elbrus and control of the Caucasus Range from 1941 to 1945. Information plaques next to the memorial provide a brief history of the battles and defense of Elbrus Region.

The project was designed by Viktor Savostikov, Valery Korneev, and Nikolai Kravchenko.
