The Balkarian saklya is a traditional mountain dwelling of the Balkar people. It is an elongated, one-story house.

The saklya's walls were made of wattle and daub, coated with clay and horse manure, and then whitewashed. The roof was originally flat and earthen, but sometimes stone.

The interior was complemented by practical elements: small benches used as beds, a wooden platform called a tapchan, and a wooden bed called an orunduk. The walls and floors were decorated with patterned felt rugs called kiyiz.

In the 19th century, under the influence of Russian culture, "Russian-style" houses appeared, featuring stoves, glass windows, and wooden floors.
