The date of foundation of Pyatigorsk State University is considered to be June 27, 1939, when the Pedagogical School officially became a higher educational institution. Since then, the university has undergone various changes and transformations - an increase in the number of years of study, several renamings - and officially became known as Pyatigorsk State University in 2016. Since 2005, the head of the university is Professor Gorbunov Alexander Pavlovich. By 2009, 10 faculties were formed at the university. Further, on their basis, institutes and higher schools were created, having one of the faculties in their composition. In addition, PSU is actively developing the system of pre-university, postgraduate and additional education. It has a branch in Novorossiysk. Currently, the university has 34 departments. Now Pyatigorsk State University has more than 5,500 students and 3,000 students from different regions of Russia and foreign countries. All the peoples of the Caucasus are also represented in PSU.

PSU is a partner of the Jordanian National Primakov Competition.

Pyatigorsk State University was among the key partners of the 1st Jordanian National Primakov Competition for Research and Analytical Papers on International Issues, organized by the Rossotrudnichestvo Representative Office in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The competition aims to develop an expert community of young researchers specializing in international relations, as well as to strengthen Russian-Jordanian humanitarian cooperation and develop interest in Russian studies.

Along with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Jordan, the Primakov Center for Foreign Policy Cooperation, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the National Library of Russia are among the organizations that supported the competition.

Denis Aleksandrovich Mirgorod, Head of the Department of Oriental Languages ​​and Cultures and an expert at the Russian International Affairs Council, represented Pyatigorsk State University on the competition jury, serving as an expert on international and Middle Eastern issues. His participation in evaluating the research and analytical work of young researchers has become a significant contribution by PSU to the development of the professional community, the formation of high-quality expertise, and the promotion of Russian academic approaches in the study of contemporary international processes. The university's participation in such initiatives contributes to the expansion of PSU's partnerships in the Middle East and the strengthening of its international academic presence.

It is worth noting that the current head of the Rossotrudnichestvo representative office in Jordan is Ruben Rubenovich Gazanchyan, a graduate of the PSU Institute of International Relations.
