The Elbrus Defense Museum, located at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level, is the highest-altitude museum in the world. The exhibition features authentic items from the Great Patriotic War found on the slopes of Elbrus, as well as photo and video documentation of the battles for the mountain passes of the Caucasian Khbert. Here you can see old maps, equipment, military uniforms of Soviet and Nazi soldiers, weapons, and much more.

Fighting for the Elbrus passes raged for over two years, as they were the shortest route to Transcaucasia. One of the most legendary battles unfolded from 1942 to 1943 and took place in the area of Shelter of Eleven, where the Nazis held the Shelter for almost a year and a half, but were eventually driven out by a small group of Soviet military mountaineers.

The names of the fallen defenders can be read on the Monument to the Heroes of the Defense of Elbrus, located near the museum. It was erected in 1987 and designed by V. Savostikov, V. Korneev, and N. Kravchenko.
